Biertan

Atractii

The fortifications around the church are considered to be the strongest from a peasant fortress in Transylvania (UNESCO heritage). The eastern bastion was once the solitary where the husbands and wives were imprisoned and were given a single plate, spoon, fork, cup and a single bed throughout the stay. Usually they were ending up reconciled without any further recourse to justice. Moreover, at the end of the stair which leads to the church one can notice a big boulder on which, every Sunday, the ones who behaved badly during the week were seated in order to be seen and be educated by the community. In the northern part of the fortification there is a door with a very complicated system of 19 locks, made by local craftsmen in 1515, a system which stirred a great interest in the international exhibitions from 1910 and 1937.
Biertan holds a rich collection of original documents from the fifteenth to seventeenth century, silverware and decorative art pieces which are evocative for the civilization of Transylvanian Saxons. The masterpiece of the choir is the folding triptych altar which is the largest in Transylvania. It consists of 28 painted panels manufactured between 1482 and 1513 by an artist which was probably formed in the cultural environment of Vienna and Nuremberg. The main panel describes the Crucifixion of Christ with Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene embracing the cross.
